The Country Cottage look?

April 13, 2010 · 3 comments

I’m hoping to redecorate my house to get a country cottage look. I have a wooden floor and roof. The walls are painted a yellowy/creamy color. I have wooden furniture. I dont want to mess around with the wall/floor/roof - So these I will not be decorating. But I do want to remodel my sofa ( it’s made of wood) - I can change the cushions, and I want to introduce a lot of candles ( do you think this goes with the country cottage look?, I would also like to add some wall hangings ( maybe)…what are the colors that I should work with?… and I do not like baskets cos these collect a lot of dust
Any information would be much appreciated - Websites would be great….

Everyone tells me that my house looks like a little cottage so I’m guessing that I embrace this style but really I just choose what catches my eye.

I have lots of candles in different funky holders. Anything from a flowerpot to a saucer holds my candles. Plenty of plants and a scattering of silk flowers tuckered here and there. Softer muted colors that are warm: sage, rose, cream, beige, red/violet. I use only gold for my photo frames. The more ornate the better :) Lots of my stuff is garden inspried. I took a garden trellis, hung it on the wall and used the openings as frames for artwork. I have a handful of antiques throughout the house. A quilt as a wall hanging in the breakfast area.

As for changing out the couch, I did that with mine. It’s a wood frame. I wrapped the back cushions in quilt batting. Overlap it in the back and tape it with masking tape. This helps eliminate that separated look of each cushion. Then I took a single flat bedsheet and wrapped it around the cushions. Same for the seat cushions: batting and another flat single bedsheet. You can pin the sheets in place but once you get them tucked down into the cushions they stay in place.
I used either msted solids or sometimes in the spring a floral that has nosegays of pansies. You could use a quilt or chenille bedspread and it might look terrific. Just play with fabrics you really like.
Toss a vintage shawl over the back or maybe a nice throw and you’re done. I change out my sofa covers with the seasons and it takes me maybe 15 minutes.

With a yellowy wall color, I would say light blue and a hint of green would definately look country. Especially if you had some plaid fabric somewhere in the mix
