Lots of places - check for B&B listings in AAA books or online..

Auberge Mendocino is about 1 mile south of Mendo. In addition to rooms in the big house and the newer building, they have a two room cottage with an ocean view and I think it has a HT. Very friendly owners and the breakfast is wonderful.

Heritage House in Little River (actual filming location for the 1978 movie, Same Time, Next Year.) Several rooms and cottages.

I grew up on the coast and my best advice is that if you are planning on exploring the entire coastline - timbercove to mendocino to stay in gualala and be in the middle. Some unique places to stay are:
1) St. Orres - gualala
This is an old russian fort complete with a four star restaurant.
2) The Lighthouse - Pt. Arena
Stay in a cottage at the lighthouse. Ask for Rae when you call.
3) Rent a house at The Sea Ranch
This is your best bet, you will have access to all the beaches, river access, tennis courts, and the swimming pools and can get a house or condo with a hot tub. Try Rams Head Realty at the Sea Ranch (area code 707)
4) Timber Cove Inn - A nice cozy atmosphere with hottubs in Timber Cove… Enjoy your trip!!!!

it depends on how much of a ‘town’ environment you want, and how far you want to drive.

While Mendocino is the farthest to get to (assuming you are coming from the Bay Area), it is a real village with lots of B&Bs and restaurants; Gualala and Elk are more like a dips in the road - a strip of businesses on both side of the highway that go for a bit and then stop. Just a few restaurants.

On the other hand, Mendo is likely to be more expensive….
