Chapter 1: The Vision
She was swiftly walking down Hannison Street in a hooded black cloak. She looked around; making sure nobody else was there. As she turned around, she bumped into a tall, hooded man. He rasped, “I have come for you and your sisters Alexandra. Lord Mafeyi awaits you.” He grabbed her wrist and started to pull her in the opposite direction. She screamed, but no one was there to help her.
“Alex! Alex! Wake up!” Alex’s eyelids fluttered open.
“Huh?” she said. She peered around the dark room to see her sister’s face looming in front of her.
“Wake up! What’s wrong? You’ve been screaming help and muttering weird names. Whose Lord Ma- May- whatever his name is?” said Bella.
“What? I- I- think I had a nightmare.” Alex stuttered.
“Poor Alexandra,” Bella sneered. “Had a nightmare? Why don’t you snuggle up with Mommy?”
“Shut up! And for the thousandth time, call me Alex, okay? You know I hate that girlish name!”
“I know,” Bella grinned. “That’s what’s great about that name. It’s totally against your personality, tomboy. Until you stop calling me Isabella, I’ll keep calling you Alexandra.”
“Fine, Bella.” Alex sighed. “ I’ll stop calling you that babyish name and you stop calling me that girlish name.”
“Fine with me,” said Bella happily.
“Whatzdacommotion?” muttered a sleepy voice in the corner of the bedroom.
“Nothing Tiffany,” Bella said sweetly. “Go back to sleep! Go back to Dream Land.”
“You could sleep through a hurricane,” she added under her breath.
“Can not!” Tiffany exclaimed, all traces of sleepiness replaced by anger. She threw a pillow at Bella and it hit Bella right in the face.
“You stupid idiot!” Bella screamed, taking the pillow and throwing it back at Tiffany. It hit her hard in the stomach.
“You jerk!” Tiffany roared back and soon Alex was in the midst of a very violent pillow fight.
“ If you can’t beat them, join them is the old saying!” Alex said, and joined the pillow fight.
“Girls! What’s going on?” their mother shouted from the kitchen downstairs.
“ Nothing!” the girls chorused, barely managing to stifle their giggles. As the girls went downstairs for breakfast, they didn’t think anything could go wrong with their lives. But, dear reader, they were terribly wrong.
Chapter 2: The Forest
“Mom, we’re going to go for a walk!” Tiffany shouted as the three girls walked out of the cottage, slamming the door behind.
“How many times have I told you not to slam the door?” their mother shouted back at them from the cottage.
“Uhhh, like a million?” Bella said. Her sisters giggled as they heard their mother slamming around the cottage muttering things under her breath that the sisters agreed, weren’t too good.
They loved to explore the woods that surrounded their modest cottage, where they (except Tiffany) hunted birds, deer, rabbit, and other game. Their father had died when they were very young, and he left behind the small cottage the sisters were living in with their mother. Since there wasn’t a man in the family, no money was to be found, and their mother home schooled the sisters. Bella and Alex hunted and gathered fruit, nuts, and berries in the wood, and their hunts supported the family.
Alexandra (a.k.a. Alex) age 12, was a tomboy, and loved anything to do with mythical creatures. Each visit to the forest was an opportunity for her to see if these fascinating creatures really existed. Her sisters told her that mythical creatures did not exist, but she believed that one day, she would get to see her favorite mythical creature- the dragon. Alex was always treated like a baby because she was the youngest.
Isabella (a.k.a. Bella), age 13, was fascinated by magic. She always dreamed of performing magic, and was totally obsessed with anything that had to do with magic- from books to fake wands and cauldron. Alex always grumbled about how Bella and Tiffany were saying that magical and mythical creatures didn’t exist but agreed that magic existed. Bella was always the one with a sense of humor, but no one would understand nor honor the fact. Naturally, Bella didn’t get along with her sisters.
Tiffany, the oldest, at an age of 15, practically lived in the forest. She could identify each and every species of plants or animals in the forest. She loved nature, and couldn’t bear to hunt anything. She was a vegetarian and spent her time exploring the forest while her younger siblings hunted. Tiffany always had a knack of communicating with the forest animals, but she didn’t tell her sisters because she thought they would tease her for it, or use her ability against her (for example to lure animals into coming into the hunting zone).
