I would like to rent a cottage, on the beach, with a kitchen. I don’t want an organized resort, but I do want the option of activities within a reasonable distance. (Esspecially a bar). Does anyone have any suggestions?
Edit #1: Other couples may join us….we would like the freedom to invite others.
EDIT #3: Travel agents will only work with resorts, there is no commission to be had in cottage rentals. All they want to do is steer you to an all-inclusive resort and cash the check. Big money for them, little effort.

Ive only passed through the Belize airport… was a bit scary with customs for some reason. From there we took a small plane to the island of Roatan just off of Belize, about 1/2 hour flight. Same great culture, same amazing snorkeling/scuba, restaurants, bars, small island feel and travel time from place to place is a breeze with lots of great things to do, and relaxation. I did stay at a cottage there for the week, kitchen etc.. included. Very reasonable price, avacado trees outside, cashews, private beach area everywhere was an amazing vacation. And there are plenty of flights/boats to surrounding islands etc. such as belize if needed.
O and i set it all up myself online, no travel agents. Emails and phone.

You’re best bet is to contact a travel agent. Cottages may not be so easy to find via the internet…travel agents will have access to more than just hotels.
I haven’t used them to book - only browsing and daydreaming! But there’s a site called homeaway.com that lists apts/condos all over the world.
Depending on what you want to do, you probably don’t want to stay on the mainland. Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are two of the popular locations for beach-oriented vacations [Caulker is very small].
