We live in a period property and all three cottages are the same but how do we find out if they have been extended at the back (to accomodate kitchens and bathrooms)
The walls are all incredibly thick (as are most period properties) inc the rear walls but if it was extended a long time ago they may have made them as thick as the originals? Who would have the information?

The walls will be less stronger? Like in my house it has had extensions and the walls kinda like when you bang them they make a different sound
In some countries, the city or county authorities approve works done to homes and maintain records of applications. If you’re in the UK you can contact your local Borough Council and ask the Planning Department for information. Of course, this only applies to modern properties, but they may be aware of work done to older or historic properties – for instance, a large number of older homes were enlarged to accommodate bathrooms after the war, and some Councils have records of this work.
You can also look at your ownership deeds, which should include a copy of the original floorplans. This will enable you to see if the properties have been extended. If your mortgage provider is holding your deeds, you can ask them or the Land Registry for a copy of the plans, but they may make a charge. (It’s always a good idea to keep a copy of your deeds for reference.)
