Can I build my cooker hood out of wood?

July 14, 2010 · 4 comments

I have recently renovated my kitchen and have a new 900mm wide cooker.

I am looking for a cottage style hood maybe something along the lines of an old fire place, to place over the cooker and install an extractor fan up inside.

Having done some reserch I have dicovered to buy it will cost me more than the cooker!

So I have started thinking about building one myself. Some of you my be thinking "A cooker hood out of wood!!!" Well all fitted kitchens with extractors have chipboard housings and wall cupboards either side, so I’m sure it can be done. Has anyone got any practical advice regarding materials paint/finishing options installing extractor inside the cooker hood

Many Many thanks

Yes you can but it’s not recommended.

1st. It’s going to be VERY difficult to clean. These things get covered in grease.
2nd. It’s going to get hot. Not a good idea since wood burns.
3rd. The price you are looking at probably includes the ducting, fan, filter and other bits that you will have to provide anyway. Shop around for cheaper is my advice or even get a sheet metal worker to quote you before spending your hard earned dosh.

It can be done, but it might be safer if you have the enclosure built using sheetmetal, then covering it with wood, or other materials such as tiles or thin-brick. If you use the exhaust fan when appropriate, you shouldn’t have much worry about the heat getting to the wood.

If you decide to go with the wood, getting an exact match to the rest of the cabinets will be very difficult unless you’re a professional finisher. You might consider finishing it in an accent color. Once the color is achieved, the surface should be coated with a clear, satin lacquer - at least 2 coats.

yes but it has to be 800mm minimum above the range if it is gas and 700mm for electric the instutions in the range should tell you

Yes you can make it out of wood, but the heat could discolour it and the grease will be almost impossible to remove after a while - constant cleaning with a de-greaser would help, but it would also discolour the finish.
