Help! I need decorating ideas for my 3 & 6 year old daughter’s bedroom. Need a princess/bug combo. Ideas?

March 28, 2009 · 5 comments

We have a baby on the way so my daughters will soon be sharing a room. To make the transition more fun, we're going to re-do their room to some extent, but are trying to keep the budget low.

Details:
-The room is small, my husband is building bunkbeds for them.
-The wall is currently painted lavender, I'd like to keep that.
-My 3 year old wants princesses, but the 6 year old wants bugs.
-I love the idea of murals or wall stickers, but haven't seen any ideas that really strike me.
-There is a good size walk in closet that I could put a dresser into to clear floor space.
-Furniture wise, I'd like to keep the bed, a desk, mirrored dresser, and they have a kid size table which is pink.
-The curtain is cottage style light green with flowers.

I'd really like to get creative here, but space and money is limited. My husband is handy and artistic. I can sew. I also have a couple big pieces of light purple sheer (used to be curtains) that I could use somehow. I hope to make or buy new matching bedspreads. The floor is carpeted tan.

Any ideas are welcome……Thanks!

If your husband is handy (which you say he is!) have him use plywood to create a "castle front" for the bunk bed, as elaborate as you want! At the very least, I would make two tower cutouts to put at either end. Also, instead of a regular guard rail for the top bunk, you could make it look like the top wall of the castle. Inexpensive way to have a princess bed!

I do really like the netting and bug patch idea! Also, if you can borrow a projector (like in classrooms with the transparencies). Trace pictures of cute bugs onto transparencies, project them on the wall, trace, and paint!

use the purple sheer curtain for a "mosquito net" for the child that wants bugs you can get "bug" patches ( lady bugs dragon flies what ever ) you can sew on the net to make it more buggy ..jo-ann has the patches

I thought everyone's ideas were good especially the projector. But remember princess' look good in a garden setting with bugs all around her, they go well together. Paint a basic green hilly grass, maybe with her castle in the far background, her sitting and bugs everywhere else with the projector. This and the rest should make the girls both happy.

Something cheap you can do is get blackboard paint for one on the walls. This way you can draw lady-bugs or princesses in colored chalk. When the girls likes and dislikes change, you can just erase and draw again.
