Decorating my new apartment! Please help!?

January 13, 2009 · 7 comments

I just moved into a small cottage style home. The walls are a light green, hardwood floors. The kitchen and living room are basically one room {no divider}. I was wondering what colors, accents, and other accessories would make it look beautiful and spacious. I was thinking white, see-through curtains (to allow light in) and a mirror (to make it look larger). What should I do?!

1] white sheers sound great for living area – do get blinds or shades for bedroom, if you use sheers!
2] an area rug under living or dining area, will divide space without making it seem 'choppy'.
3] could use the sofa to divide the living from dining area, or an open bookcase/low shelves, with ornaments or plants on top.
I have also used a bookcase/shelves to separate kitchen from dining area – provides storage for small kitchen accessories [ blender, toaster, some coffeemakers, cookbooks, canisters ]
4] put mirror across from or at right angles to windows
5] upholstered furniture in white or light to medium gray [ if you like cool tones ]; or ivory or light to medium golden beige
[ if you like warm tones ]
6] then add your three fav colors in accessories – rugs, lamps/shades, ornaments, vase/planter, candles/holders, art work
7] most furniture should be double duty if possible – a trunk [ storage ] side or coffee table [ plexiglass on top to protect finish ], storage ottoman as suggested above, platform bed with drawers underneath
8] I'd frame all art in similar color/materials to provide some unity, and allow you to switch things around [ brass/chrome, oak/walnut,colored enamel ]
9] use same metal throughout for frames, accents – cool tones: use chrome, or iron; warm: use brass or copper.
10] add some photos of family, friends; some green plants, and your collections if you have room.

sounds like you already have a plan to me and it sounds like you know what you are doing.do you plan on getting an area rug for the middle of your living room.that would look nice.

You can divide the space with an area rug. Small spaces require unique storage solutions. I'd use dual purpose things like a storage footstool. Hang the mirror on the wall furthest from you when you enter the room or put up a perspective piece of art. Good luck!

I love yellows, oranges, and reds with hardwood floors, it makes the wood seem warmer. If your serious about white, then do the the room in white, because white walls don't make wood work "pop". I did my dining room which has hardwood floors in deep yellows and browns, and it's sooo, cozy and warm, everyone loves it. I have some touches of fore-sty green and purple in there to. Good Luck

Depending on the shade of green, I usually like blues, greens and white together. It's a cool, but soothing look. I like your curtain idea; heavy draperies weigh a room down and make it look smaller. The best way to keep your new home looking spacious is to not have lots of clutter…keep it simple!
